FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Chambersburg (October 7) - According to the results of the questionnaire circulated by the Franklin County Coalition, 88% of candidates for local office agree that the loss of forest and farmland within the County is a "serious problem which needs to be addressed by all levels of government." The results of the questionnaire can be obtained through the Voter Guide recently produced by the Franklin County Coalition and available free of charge by contacting the Coalition at 530-0764.

The question dealing with the loss of forest and farmland was the first question asked of area candidates for the purposes of the compilation of the Voter Guide. Of the twenty-six respondents, twenty-three agreed that the situation was serious. The three candidates who do not believe that the loss is a serious problem - Robert Wareham and Tom Newcomer of Chambersburg, and Jamie Reed of Mont Alto, are clustered in the urban areas of Franklin County. Of the candidates running for Township Supervisor, the response was unanimous that farmland and forest loss must be addressed by local governments.
All of the candidates for County Commissioner also agreed that the loss of forest and farmland is a serious problem for Franklin County.

Thomas Linzey, co-coordinator of the Franklin County Coalition, explained that "these results are impressive - almost 90% of all of the candidates running this year for local and County office agree that loss of forest and farmland is a serious problem. With this type of consensus, we need to move forward in establishing projects at the local government level to begin to permanently preserve these Franklin County assets."

The Franklin County Coalition was formed in 1998 to promote a Sustainable Franklin County. Currently, eleven nonprofit citizen and environmental organizations belong to the Coalition and over thirty locally owned businesses have endorsed the Coalition.

Single copies of the Voter Guide or packs of 20 Voter Guides are available by contacting the Franklin County Coalition at 530-0764.
