FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Greencastle (October 26) - The Franklin County Forest and Farmland
Conservancy announced today that the organization has sent a letter
to the Washington Township Supervisors urging the Supervisors to
deny a recent request to rezone 103 acres of farmland.
The letter, drafted by Bonnie Shockey - a Director of the Conservancy
- complimented the Washington Township Supervisors on their comprehensive
plan, which provides protections for farmland in the Township.
The letter went on to describe the property which would be rezoned,
which includes the historic Harbaugh Church, the adjoining cemetery
and surrounding farmland, and urged the Township Supervisors to
adopt the recommendation of the Washington Township Planning and
Zoning Commission, which had voted to deny the requested rezoning
of the 103 acres of property.
Bonnie Shockey explained in the letter that "the Board of
Directors of the Franklin County Forest and Farmland Conservancy
encourage you, the Washington Township Supervisors, to reinforce
the September 13, 1999 decision of the Planning and Zoning Commission
by not granting the rezoning of the Elgin family's one hundred
and three (103) acres of prime farmland."
The Franklin County Forest and Farmland Conservancy was founded
in early 1999 as the only private land trust in the County. For
